SATURN/EURASAP Workshop on Urban Air Quality Management Systems

Hotel Rodos Palace, Rhodes, Greece, 3 April 2002

Nicolas Moussiopoulos, Thessaloniki, Greece

The European Air Quality Framework Directive and associated daughter directives require projections of air quality in urban areas for assessment against air quality objectives. Many cities have their own, additional goals that may go beyond the EU limit values. Air quality strategies necessitate the development of plans to reduce pollution in specific areas. In view of this, practical management systems are being developed, which can be used to undertake these tasks. This requires advanced operational air quality models with which a range of air quality management scenarios may easily be assessed. These can include traffic management options such as low emission zones, clear zones or multiple occupancy vehicles etc. and other emission reduction options for other sources. Such analysis also requires that input parameters such as emission factors may easily be modified. Recent research work has contributed to the development and application of integrated systems for supporting urban air quality management. Also, reliable tools for forecasting the frequency and severity of air quality limit value exceedances in cities are now emerging.

Aim of this SATURN/EURASAP workshop is to demonstrate the capabilities of currently available urban air quality management systems and to elucidate current development trends. Furthermore, the workshop will address the application of such systems for optimising abatement strategies and aspects related to the dissemination of environmental information to the public.

The workshop is organised in the frame of EURO-SUSTAIN 2002, an International Conference and Eureka Partnering Event (information: http://www.eureka-gr.gr/eurosustain). Colleagues interested to attend the workshop should send an e-mail to eurosustain@aix.meng.auth.gr with a carbon copy to secretry@aix.meng.auth.gr. Those wishing to make a presentation should also submit a 200 word abstract to the same e-mail address before 21 December 2001.
