THE CHANGING CHEMICAL CLIMATE OF THE ATMOSPHERE

The first ACCENT Symposium will be hosted by the charming Urbino - Italy, 12th-16th September 2005. The exceptional Renaissance urban complex of the town harmoniously adapted to its physical site offers a suggestive framework to this Conference which would be a prime tool to promote a common European strategy in the field of atmospheric composition change.

The three main aims of the Symposium are:

  1. To review the latest scientific progress on the changing chemical climate of the European atmosphere, focusing on:
    • atmospheric aerosols and their effects on climate and human health;
    • transport and transformation of air pollutants;
    • biosphere-atmosphere exchange processes;
    • ecosystem responses to the current concentration and deposition fields;
    • their economic effects;
    • the impact of atmospheric composition change on atmospheric sustainability.
  2. To provide a "trade-fair" for the various activities aimed at integrating atmospheric composition and chemistry research in Europe, which includes:
    • global, regional and local scale modelling;
    • development of data-bases;
    • access to research infrastructures;
    • remote sensing of the atmospheric composition from space;
    • quality assurance of atmospheric measurements;
    • education and training;
    • development of public awareness of ACCENT activities.
  3. To provide an opportunity for interaction among scientists, policy makers and general public.
