THE MILLENNIUM (24TH) NATO/CCMS INTERNATIONAL TECHNICAL MEETING (ITM) ON AIR POLLUTION MODELLING AND ITS APPLICATION

Boulder, Colorado, United States, May 15-19, 2000

Francis A. Schiermeyer
US EPA/NOAA MD-80, Atmospheric Modeling Division, Research Triangle Park, NC 27711

In 1969 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) established the Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS). The subject of air pollution was from the start one of the priority problems under study within the framework of various pilot studies undertaken by this committee. The organization of a periodic conference dealing with air pollution modeling and its application has become one of the main activities within the pilot study relating to air pollution. The first five international conferences were organized by the United States as the pilot country; the second five by the Federal Republic of Germany; the third five by Belgium; the next four by The Netherlands; and the five most recent by Denmark.

The Millennium (24th) NATO/CCMS International Technical Meeting (ITM) on Air Pollution Modelling and Its Application was held in Boulder, Colorado, United States, during May 15-19, 2000. This ITM was jointly organized by the Risoe National Laboratory of Denmark (Pilot Country); by the EPA National Exposure Research Laboratory, United States (Host Country); and by the American Meteorological Society, United States (Host Organization).

The ITM was attended by 135 participants representing 30 countries from NATO Alliance, NATO Cooperative Partner, and non-NATO countries. These included Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, and Yugoslavia.

The main topics of this ITM were: Role of Atmospheric Models in Air Pollution Policy and Abatement Strategies; Integrated Regional Modelling; Global and Long-Range Transport; Regional Air Pollution and Climate; New Developments; and Model Assessment and Verification.

The members of the NATO/CCMS Scientific Committee for the ITM were: D. Anfossi (Italy), C. Borrego (Portugal), N. Chaumerliac (France), H. van Dop (The Netherlands), B. Fisher (United Kingdom), S.-E. Gryning, Chairman (Denmark), T. Iversen( Norway), G. Kallos (Greece), W. Klug (Germany), R. Salvador (Spain), G. Schayes (Belgium), F. Schiermeier (United States), Y. Schiffman (United States), D. Steyn (Canada), and D. Syrakov (Bulgaria).

Invited papers were presented by P. Builtjes of The Netherlands (Major Twentieth Century Milestones in Air Pollution Modelling and Its Application); W. Klug of Germany (What Did We Learn From the ETEX Experiment?); and A. Venkatram of the United States (Challenges of Air Pollution Modelling and Its Application in the Next Millennium).

The major sponsorship was provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, financial support was received from the Riso National Laboratory, the NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society, and EURASAP (European Association for the Science of Air Pollution). A special grant was given by NATO/CCMS to facilitate attendance of scientists from NATO Cooperative Partner countries. The next conference in this series will be held in 2001 in Belgium.
