The most important features and results of the LIMON meeting will be reviewed. Generally, two major groups of activities and programs have been presented: On the one hand monitoring the occurrence of rare lichen species in order to conserve them and on the other hand using lichens for environmental monitoring. It termed out that throughout the world lichen species and communities are endangered mainly due to human activity and different attempts are made for preserving these species from extinction. A lot of projects deal with environmental monitoring with regard to air pollution, contamination with heavy metals, forestry and agricultural management as well as global aspects such as global climate changes. Due to great heterogeneity within air pollution monitoring techniques first attempts for a unified European technique have been made.
