3RD EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON APPLIED CLIMATOLOGY
"Tools for the environment and man of the year 2000"
16- 20 OCTOBER 2000, PISA, ITALYClimate, and even truer for climate change and climate variability, has a deep influence on all human activities. If this statement has traditionally been accepted as true for agriculture and forestry, it is now becoming, year after year, more evident that climate has primary effects also on human health and well being, transportation and tourism, environment management, architecture and urbanisation . In this context Applied Climatology can be regarded as "The Tool" for studying these interactions. It is the instrument for identifying, reducing and mitigating the risk components of the climate. At the same time, in fact, the knowledge acquired by applied climatologists can be used for a more compatible, sustainable and efficient use of large and renewable resources. In other words, climate can be regarded as an environmental risk and an environmental resource.
In order to realise this mission, applied climatology is searching for new and more efficient tools . In this sense there are great expectations with regard to the use of new technologies ranging from Remote Sensing of Climatic data, to all the other tools for data management and integration (like GIS Technologies) , data analysis and presentation. Even greater expectations concern increasing capabilities for providing long term climate forecasts.
This conference aims to provide the opportunity for an up-dated discussion on the most recent research results in applied climatology and for a profitable exchange of information between the scientific and users communities. Scientific contributions are solicited on all aspects of applied Climatology. Sessions will be arranged to cover the range of topics submitted. In particular, we encourage authors to submit papers dealing with the following subthemes.
- Tools: Remote Sensing and GIS applications to Climate Data Sets
- Climate and Air Pollution
- Climate and Renewable Energy Sources
- Climate, Agriculture and Forestry
- Climate and Health, including indoor climate
- Climate and Tourism, cultural heritage and urban climate
- Impacts of Climate Change and Climate Variability
- Regional Climate prediction
- Assessment of Climate Risk events
